1863 Brewing LLC is excited to get started in Morgantown WV. 1863 will be located at 1291 University Avenue in the heart of Morgantown West Virginia. You might notice in the pictures a semblance of familiarity. We will be located in the location of West Virginia’s oldest Brewpub. Originally the One Onion in the 1980’s, then West Virginia Brewing until the early 2000’s when it became Morgantown Brewing under 2 separate iterations.

Why 1863? 1863 was a tumultuous and exciting time in the United States. In 1863 we were in the middle of the Civil War. Book ended by the Fredericksburg Campaign and the Battle of Gettysburg on June 20, 1863 West Virginia officially became a state.

While we are excited to reinvigorate this location much will stay the same. The classic brewpub feel; original copper brewhouse, updated copper bar, and historical Morgantown decor will stay the same. Classic Morgantown Brewing beers will grace the menu…Zack Morgan IPA, Alpha Blond, and 80 Schilling Scotch Ale to name a few. We are actively researching and hope to find original beer recipes from the One Onion and West Virginia Brewing days.

We are also excited to welcome new beers and food options. These will include a Simcoe and Citra hopped IPA, Cinco De Hoppe (a blend of 5 hop varieties), and a Ube tuber inspired milkshake IPA. We are carefully curating a food menu which will be inspiring and all encompassing. Appetizers, wings, burgers, sandwiches, and diner options will be featured in this all encompassing menu which is sure to allow everyone to find something that satisfies their pallet.

Please try and bring back Appalachian Ale. It was my wife and my favorite beer there at the old Brew Pub. This is part of an article I copied from an old Daily Anthenaeum.
Ned Strauser has been the brew master at the West Virginia Brewing Company, nicknamed the Brew Pub, downtown for 14 years.
“I would say that the Appalachian Ale is our best seller. It’s a dark amber to light brown, and it’s a well-balanced beer. It has nice flavors and aromas from the dark malts we brew, but it always has a nice range of flavors and aromas from the hops we use,” Strauser said.
I think Ned is still in the area. I bet he would enjoy seeing a return of his beer and would share his recipe.
Here is the address to the article I quoted. Sorry I wasn’t able to make it a link. You’ll have to copy and paste it in your browser.

Every time we drive by my wife and I talk about going to the old Brew Pub and getting our Appalachian Ale pitcher(s) and wings. We look forward to trying 1863.

      Mike,

So glad to hear from you and we welcome your excitement for the brewery to open. If you are not already doing so please follow us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/p/1863-Brewing-61581286787610/ for updates and announcements.

I remember the old WV brewing beers and they were fantastic. I am excited to say that we have many of the original Morgantown Brewing recipes, so expect to see some of those on our tap list once we are opened in addition to our own creations. While we do not currently have access to the WV Brewing recipes that will not stop us from doing some research and seeing what we can recreate. We are also interested in anything we can find about the One Onion beers.

Thanks so much for reaching out and we look forward to seeing you at 1863 Brewing soon.
